MCSA 2008 or 2012?

  • Hi,

    I am hoping to start preparing for either an MCSA 2008 or 2012 certification. Going by Microsoft's overview page (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/sql-certification.aspx) these are the current offerings.

    I am thinking of going for the MCSA 2008 due to two reasons;

    This is what I use in my day job

    I am interested in the focus on Business Intelligence

    I have confirmed with my local test centre and they offer either choice.

    So my question is;

    Should I go with 2008 as I'd definitely be more familiar / comfortable with it?

    Can I always just upgrade to 2012 in the future?

    Thanks

  • Hi paulmfinn, and welcome to the forum 😀

    Personally, i recommend you to go for the MCSA 2012 certification path. It's pretty similar to SQL Server 2008 and your knowledge will be more updated.SQL Server technology is changing very fast. Microsoft top certifications will be retired this year.. we have to be prepared, who knows what's next...

    Good luck on your exams ! 😎

  • Personally, I would also choose for the 2012 exams.

    Your knowledge will be up to date and ready for the future (SQL Server 2012 will be released soon).

    And, if you know the material for the 2012 exams, you also know the material for the 2008 exams.

    (SSRS and SSAS multidimensional haven't changed much between 2008 and 2012)

    Need an answer? No, you need a question

  • I asked this question a while ago, and the general consensus was 2012. There is new stuff to learn though, so there's that to consider. (There is also a Certification board on this site, which doesn't seem to be heavily used but might still be useful.)
