MCJ - The Missing Link

  • Have I gone too far too fast? Just had some intellectual juices flowing and thought I better put it down be fore I forgot things (I am getting old, the doctor told me so).

Might as well multi-task the thread.

    Focus areas:

    T-SQL

    Backup/Recovery

    High Availability/Disaster Recovery (Business Continuity?)

    SSIS

    SSBS

    SSRS

    SSAS

With that as a start, how do we start breaking this down?

    Performance Tuning

    Execution Plans

    Indexing

    Where would these go?

I was just about to say something about the first list and saw your additions.

I think there should be an administration section that covers Perf Tuning, Installation, Exec Plans, and Indexing. Even though Perf tuning, Exec Plans and Indexing could be a topic in the other areas - they should be covered in-depth in an administration exam.

Do we do a deep dive into the DMV's as well?

I think it would be vital... Either on it's own or as part of TSQL. A Journeyman SQL Server PRofessional (need to find a good acronym/term for this individual) wouldn't be able to get there unless they knew about a variety of DMV's. Particularly on the DBA side...

Perhaps the DMV/day series from GlennBerry could be a goo dplace to start for that topic.

I also suggest we keep the 'journeyman' and replace 'Microsoft Certified' with something else...like a 'SQL Server Journeyman' perhaps..one of the comments i got on the survey was that how can you call it MS certified if MS is not going to administer it, perhaps they will let PASS use that but we don't know for sure and don't want to create any wrong impressions.

    Absolutely Correct.

We would not be permitted to use Microsoft in the naming convention if they will not sponsor it.

    SQL Server Journeyman

    SSC Journeyman 😉

    Other naming ideas?

I concur, if Microsoft isn't involved we probably should change the name from MCJ, however it is product specific so could we still call it Microsoft SQL Server Journeyman, MSSJ; or SQL Server Certified Journeyman, SSCJ?

I just thought of another quandary that could be created by the name. SQL Server is a trademarked name with Microsoft. We would have to tread lightly with that too - potentially.

Jeff said something about wanting to be involved right? Seems like a perfect person to head up the TSQL subcommittee?

Additionally I see Backup/Recovery and High Availability/Disaster Recovery (Business Continuity?) inextricably linked. I perhaps see them as subtopics for a higherlevel? you can't have DR without Backup and recovery. In many ways Backup/Recovery is the means to having HA and a good Disaster recovery plan.

    -Luke.

They are linked - true. However, you could have a test strictly devoted to log-shipping, replication, clustering and mirroring with very minimal interaction on the Backup/Recovery.

I think Backup/Recovery should be tested during the HA/DR area, but also be a part of the higher level Administration exam. HA/DR need only be tested in that specific subject area.

This is good. I think anybody who has a flood of thoughts needs to spew them out so we can discuss.

On the whole Sql Server and trademarked name etc... how do other vendors websites etc handle this? I.E. SQL Server Central, Spotlight on SQL Server, various books etc... Does some "All references to SQL Server are Microsoft Trademarks etc" verbiage at the end of the test/materials exam work?

I think Glenns blog and those dmv a day articles are a great resource.

Bringing us to a new topic. There needs to be a curriculum or guidebook of study topics and resources.

Not sure on the JSSP - journeyman and professional connote different meanings.

Verbiage at the end of the exam or beginning could cover that. Steve might be better able to answer that since he has to deal with it (maybe).

I was thinking the same thing here but kept getting bit by the quote bug.

Steve, can you help out on the use of "SQL Server" and what we may need to do to avoid possible problems with Microsoft over its use?

Yeah, I was just trying to stay away from the DBA/Developer monikers... and just ended up throwing a bunch of words together... Again a need to standardize on the name person who we are targeting to attempt the certification.
