MCJ - The Missing Link

    5. Size of the board - I suggest 4, with at least 1/2 being "disinterested" (no conflict of interest).

Depending on how the board decides things, I would suggest that the board be an odd number of people so that you don't get a 50/50 split of some approving, others disapproving. Need to have the ability to break a tie somewhere in there.

Tie breakers go to The Thread...:hehe:

  • Or, to be a bit more serious, tie breakers pass if all other things say so as well. I do, however, agree that the board be made of an odd number of members to avoid this possibility.

  • Yes Odd number of Board members. I don't think it should take more than three people though.

Heh... just odd bored members? 😀

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

  • On a serious note of my own, I sure hope this MCJ thing works out well because the posts I've seen lately from some people with letters after their name have made some serious sucking sounds. There has to be at least one certification series out there that's worth a hoot.

I appreciate that. It is good to see that there is some hope for a better (more credible) certification.

  • I talked this up a little bit at the SQL Saturday in Richmond yesterday. Had an interesting talk with Andy Leonard, and he is really interested in the MCJ. He also brings up an interesting point on the MCM... if you're a consultant, you also lose billable hours for those 3 weeks. 120 hrs x $100/hr = $12,000. On top of the $18,000 + expenses. He was also cautioning about the test writing... apparently it is it's own science. He also doesn't think MS would be interested in this... they want to push their MCM.

If you can't explain to another person how the code that you're copying from the internet works, then DON'T USE IT on a production system! After all, you will be the one supporting it!

  • It make sense that MS would want to push the MCM. That is a lot of revenue lost / money invested in the MCM when you look at it from the consultant point of view.

I think that creating the exams would be a very difficult piece. The weights for each question, making it adaptive, and ensuring that each topic is adequately covered. A lot of thought needs to go into making the exams.

  • Ran across this article proclaiming the value of becoming certified. Seems to be from the cert industry, but not entirely sure.

  • Good. Because of my inherent distrust in all the other certifications, I'd like to see this one materialize provided that less fortunate folks can actually afford to attain it. We need a good and trusted cert that folks just can't get away with buying/cheating and still knowing nothing.

I had previously intended to not get involved in anything having to do with the MCJ cert but the things that I've seen from folks (especially lately) with letters after their name makes me want to get involved for the sake of the art and the industry.

I'm definitely glad to have your opinions. We just need to get others involved, and I'm pretty curious as to why others aren't posting here. My initial thought is that the few that have been continually posting are doing such a great job that they don't feel they need to post to say "me too".

.... then I consider those that have been posting, and realize that there must be a different reason - the others would state their opinion.

We really want your input Jeff. I think your opinion on this topic will bring value and help keep the certification steered in a positive direction.

I had sent an email off to PASS to try and get it forwarded out to the Chapter Leaders - but nothing materialized with it. I tried three times to follow up and it seems my emails are getting lost in a black hole somewhere. My concern there is that if PASS is not interested and MS is not interested - then we have an even bigger hurdle to clear.
