MCJ - The Missing Link

Plus, considering some people change thier screen names on a regular basis, attributing the code to '.' may not mean anything unless you happen to know who that is from association here on SSC.

Attributing a script to '.' would be funny. I think Bob would be ok with that.:-D

I'm going to go looking for a script I can use from him, just to do that. Nice one, Lynn! :hehe:

  • I like http://www.sharepointhosting.com/sharepoint-features.html for the sharepoint site. I don't see a need for anything more than the basic plan (500 Mb) @ 19.95/mo.

Compared to http://www.fpweb.net/sharepoint-hosting/comparePlans.asp which is $29 / mo but the base plan is for 1GB.

For 1 GB the price is the same at both sites (excluding the possible discounts). Both offer just about the same package and both have everything we would need. I can't see any additional features that we would need.

The first site listed has email enabled such that an email sent to a specific mailbox will post the content immediately to the site for others to see and checkout. Besides, they are hosted in Colorado, which may give somebody a chance to visit the site and maybe cut a better deal.

    edit: Fixed the second link

Now that sounds like a pretty useful feature.

The sharepointhosting.com site seems to have what we'd need, I'm somewhat confused by the quote at the bottom of the page.

All Bronze and above shared plans include full Microsoft licensing compliance

Does that mean we would need to purchase a share point license or am I just reading too much into it.

What are the doing for the basic plan if only the bronze and above are fully MS Compliant?

  • I dfon't think we need licenses for each person. That's why we'd go hosted.

Don't fret about $10-20 a month difference. Pick the best service/features.

Sorry, didn't get a chance to review the sites and plans last night. I WILL look at them tonight and offer my recommendations. One question, who, or how, are we going to make the final decision?

  • Me thinks that questions like today's QotD should be on the SSCJ core exam.

I'll be curious if you think the QOD's I have coming up (on indexes... only advance hint) will be worthy of it.

I'll let all know right now--- I haven't worked with SP much, so I will NOT be giving an opinion on what we should utilize. The only thing that stands out to me in line with any kind of preference is that the first one had the ability to post things into SP via email... to me, that is an advantage.

I went back and looked at the wording in Jeff's draft. The issue there is that many of us borrow code for others and use it. That could be seen as an issue here. I think in terms of defining this, you might need to more explicitly use something along the lines of giving credit and having permission.

There IS a difference between copying a copyrighted article and, by either by omission or otherwise, claiming it as your own and using a "borrowed" snippet as a part of the code. If there wasn't, none of us would ever be able to write any code because there are very few new ideas that haven't either already been published in someone's book or on a copyrighted forum somewhere.

Understand such things should be a part of the "core module" that all tracks of "MCJ" training and testing should include.

    --Jeff Moden

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
