MCJ - The Missing Link

A blog is a no brainer...(google blogs 🙂 Unless we are looking for something terribly sophisticated. A site which would have better features has to come via a sponsor. We can ask some folks for help. But again instead of rambling on about what we intend to do and so on a crisp concise mission statement will help. I will try asking couple of people today.

I'll put this out there right now - I have no problem sponsoring a site if need be. Sometimes having those additional features is necessary. Also, needing several people to be able to login to a secure place is nice. We would also be able to use a domain name that does not trigger internet police aka websense.

AWWWWE Some!! You get my vote! I dont think a domain name like SQLMidLevelCert or something would trigger anybody's attention.

  • A quick start, now to enhance it!

To develop an Industry Recognized Microsoft SQL Server certification that truly represents the skills and knowledge of Journeyman level Database Professional proficient with Microsoft SQL Server.

Did we decide if the MCITP was a prerequisite for this cert or are we developing something between MCITP and MCM that doesn't require the MCITP?

I'm asking, because there may be people out there that will think the MCITP is just a waste of money just to be eligible to earn the SSCJ.

Initially we had said that. However, if this is not an MS cert - what point would it prove? I think it could be a viable alternative and will be of higher value than the MCITP.

I just thought of another discussion topic - Marketing. There needs to be some industry recognition of this new certification.

Classic chicken-n-egg thing...who is the body behind the cert, would be first question any 'buyer' would ask if we attempt to market it. Perhaps we put together whatever we can and present to PASS at the summit. If PASS buys it they become the body to sell this based on. Am not sure anyone would 'buy' anything beyond expressing interest at this point.

I really like it except that what is 'journeyman level' for those who have not been through this thread. Perhaps we can say 'advanced skills and knowledge also called Journeyman level'?

Remember, I said a start. Now to enhance and improve. We are currently a community driven endeavour. At some point we need to approach a group, such as PASS regarding this certification. At this time, the goal of the mission statement is to drive our development, not some other organizations. We need something we as a group can get behind and support.

And, it could change over time as we continue down the development path for this certification.

  • Well, in the classical definition, a journeyman is between apprentice and master, correct?

Makes sense, wasn't sure if it is understood widely but looks like it is. Thanks.

All volunteers, PM Jason you email address, he will forward on to the team the email addresses. (Guess what Jason, you are the lead!!)

Thanks Lynn. I thought a more mature person should lead. 😀

Well, you got the blog going, so I just thought you'd be the right person for the job. Plus, mature is just another word for old.:-P

Glad you picked up on that - I was gonna say more elderly.

Honestly, I think the team should make that decision once we all get together online or on the phone or however we do it (Live Meeting?). I just thought it easier to have you be the focus for now since you have taken the lead on this for now. And i must say that you are doing an awesome job!

Thanks for the compliment. We can elect a lead, I can do it - however we decide to do it.

We could have a rotational lead depending on the current focus of the group. Just another thought.

I really think that each subtask will have a natural lead anyway - we can flush that all out in due time.

It is something that you will see from time to time throughout enterprise businesses. They will re-evaluate the mission statement and change it - sometimes annually.

I also suggest we keep the 'journeyman' and replace 'Microsoft Certified' with something else...like a 'SQL Server Journeyman' perhaps..one of the comments i got on the survey was that how can you call it MS certified if MS is not going to administer it, perhaps they will let PASS use that but we don't know for sure and don't want to create any wrong impressions.

    Absolutely Correct.

We would not be permitted to use Microsoft in the naming convention if they will not sponsor it.

    SQL Server Journeyman

    SSC Journeyman 😉

    Other naming ideas?

I think I'd like SQL Server Certified Journeyman
