MCDBA - Where Do I Start?

  • Hello,

Its tough to find the time (re: work & personal schedules), but its my resolution this year to buckle down and take courses towards the MCDBA track. Originally I had planed this about 2 years ago w/MSSQL2000 (time flies). With 2005 release, I'm guessing there is a whole new set of exams (Is it still called MCDBA??).

Any help on where to begin & tips would be greatly apprecatiated.

Also, are there any suggestions on other courses (ie: non database) that would compliment DBA skill sets?

    Many thanks. Jeff

  • It's now the MCTS (Tech Specialist) with one exam and the MCITPro (IT Pro) with a few more. There are a few different SQL Server tracks (Admin, developer, bi developer) available.

Start with 70-431, which is the base exam. Due to book writing, I skipped it and did the 441, 443, and 444 exams first. None too hard if you have a good base in databases, but you definitely need to work with ss2k5.

I'd suggest you get familiar with Management Studio and working with SQL Server 2005 on the developer edition first and get comfortable performing basic tasks. Installs, configs, queries, etc.

The 431 list is here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-431.mspx

Look over the list of areas at the bottom and be sure you're able to work with them. Check out articles here on the site for specific topics.
