Masters Degree worth it?

  • Hello World:

While I was an undergrad, I already knew what career I wanted to pursue--Database Administration (of all things...).

Back then, there wasn't any majors that were tailored for Databases. You basically had to pick between Computer Science or Information Systems, both which only taught relational database theory and simple SQL stuff.

It's been 2.5 years since I graduated with my Bachelors. I worked as a DBA for 2 years right out of college and I recently started a new job at a new company as their first real DBA. I'm living the dream...well almost. I really love what I do and I can't get enough of it. At work I do SQL at home I study for SQL Server stuff.

I got my MCSA and I'm 2/3 done with my MCITP Database Administrator. I'm probably crazy because I want the MCITP Database Developer cert too.

One day I ran into Boston University's MSCIS with Database concentraction on facebook. I wondered if having this degree will help me out with my career.

I actually spoke with one of their advisers back in May. She said since I already have work experience, I could easily get in and GRE wouldn't be required for me. Wow, thats really cool I thought to myself. However I just wanted people's opinion on obtaining this, would it be worth the time and investment.

One thing I notice out in the real world, people don't care what certifications you have. They only care if you can do the job. However I must admit, studying for certifications had help me on my job and even tough interview questions.

There is a lot of talent on SQLServerCentral.com and my ultimate dream is to become one of them. I'm kind of young and I only have 2.5 years experience so there is much for me to learn.

    Thanks!
