Master.ldf and Master.mdf - do they need to be in the same location?

well i dont think it matters if they are in the same directory

but if you are a sql rookie i would leave them in the directory they were installed in, this will hose up your server if you dont move them correctly

Tempdb is the one the needs to be moved usually

Well I've moved all the log files on this server - I just didn't know if there was something special on the system db's.

you would change the location of master.ldf by changing the startup parameters, bringing down the instance

master.ldf files should be created in the new directory
