Hi,
I've set some DTS packages to automate reports, when i run them manually they work fine and mail the results as they should. But when i try to schedule them they fail at the send mail stage, can anyone give me any hints as to how i could fix this?

(I thought that it might be the email settings on the server, but since then i've assigned an email account with identical login and password as the SQL account.)

If the job doesnot send emails then do u know what account starts the SQL Agent and can that account send emails?

As SS said, check the SQL Agent service account is mail enabled. This kb should tell you everything you need: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263556/
