Two of four desktop installations of SQL 2005 Tools and BOL have been unsuccessful with SQL Server Management Studio closing down when I try to connect to a server. The PCs are Windows XP with Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express. Both times I was prompted that an older version of SQL Server was detected, which appeared to be a reference to SQL Server 2005 Express since no other version existed on the PCs. After applying SQL 2005 SP1 and rebooting the PC I opened Management Studio and tried to connect to a server. As soon as I hit enter the Studio closes. Does anyone know of any bugs like what I described?
Thanks, Dave

It turns out our Cisco Security Agent (CSA) was blocking the application and not reporting this to the Event Viewer log. A rule has been written for CSA to not block the application.
Is it common for an installation of the SQL 2005 tools and SP1 to take approximately 35 minutes to complete or should I be looking at other issues such as our virus software slowing down the installation?
Thanks, Dave

35 minutes for a client installation does seem a bit on the high side. I have an old IBM E-Series 330 Server (pizza box), single CPU P-III at 1.2 Gh and it only takes about 10-15 minutes for the base client installation. I cannot comment on SP1 though.

SP1 appeared to take about 10 minutes for me today. From what I've been reading from other people yesterday and today it sounds like 30 - 35 minutes is not too uncommon. One of these days I'll try an installation on a PC that does not contain Trend virus software or Cisco Security Agent to see how much they slow down the install.
Thanks, Dave

Dave, we use Trend on both clients and servers. It really has no really noticable effect on the time needed. The only hiccup I have noticed is that when computer receives a new pattern definition things slow down for about 60-90 seconds.

Thats good to know. Thanks.
I just ran a test on a 3GHz PC with 1MB of RAM and Trend, Cisco Security Agent and a product called Altiris all disabled. The installation of the 2005 tools took 20 minutes and the install of SP1 completed in 9 minutes so overall the installation was about 29 minutes without virus or security software.
