All our SQL 2005 servers are currently sitting at SP2 GDR build 3054.
So now I want to make sure that every pc that has Management Studio installed is also updated to the same GDR release however I have noticed that when I upgrade the client tools on a given pc to SP2 (SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x86-ENU.exe) & then install (SQLServer2005-KB934458-x86-ENU.exe) Help, About shows me that Management Studio is still sitting at 9.00.3042.00.
Is this normal? Do I even need to install the GDR build update? Although i'm sure I read somwhere that you should apply these updates.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,
We had a similar deployment a few weeks back, and we applied both SP2 and GDR (same builds as you mentioned) to all SSMS installations. I don't recall if the SSMS version number changed between the SP2 and GDR installations, but the GDR install detected "client tools" or some such to update, so we let it run. I don't have any supporting documentation, but like you, I was "sure" that it needed to be applied. Our current SSMS version is 9.00.3042.00 as well, and we haven't had any problems. It's also worth mentioning that an update for Books Online is a separate install. Hope that helps.

Thanks MIJ for your reply.
We'll plod on updating SSMS client tools to build 3054, no problems in doing so so far! I didn't realise that bol was a seperate install, i'll have to look into that.
Cheers,
Mark

It did seem to take a while to install everything, so I can see why you wouldn't want to do more than you have to. We only had a handful of clients to update so it was't that big a deal.
Here's the BOL link, btw: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BE6A2C5D-00DF-4220-B133-29C1E0B6585F&displaylang=en

Thanks again for the bol link MIJ.
We only have 16 or so clients so it's not too bad - cheers.
