You should enable logging, that will help to determine what is wrong and give more information.

My recommendation is to stop using maintenance plans altogether. They suck in a bunch of ways. Go to http://ola.hallengren.com/ and get his maintenance stuff and learn and use it. Incredibly powerful and useful stuff, for FREE, that even comes with super documentation. This is a serious no-brainer.
