Maintenance Jobs Calendar

  • There has been contention on infrastructure level and quick checks found that maintenance plans across multiple instances are running at the same time.

I have been tasked to create a maintenance plan calendar which shows the time taken by each maintenance job each instance everyday. For example, index rebuild job takes 1.5 hours to complete between 1.30 am and 3 am each day. Calendar show show this as a progress bar in that time.

The reason behind having this calendar is the graphical representation of db maintenance jobs across 100+ instances and is easier to represent it to higher management.

I do have the job execution history data and been struggling with graphical representation. It is the time when i feel like i should have learnt excel skills as well and not concentrated on SQL Server only :hehe:

Has anyone of you dealt with similar problem before? Any help is appreciated.

After analyzing current data and presentation to managers, next phase will be to provide a working solution and i don't think will be a problem for me 🙂

  • Monitoring job history with SSRS http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Job/101563/

or similar Excel with data bars http://www.brighthubpm.com/templates-forms/3418-using-excel-to-create-a-gantt-chart/

    Another option is SQLjobvis, http://sqlsoft.co.uk/sqljobvis.php

  • Thanks Andrew, will try it sometime today and get back to you with outcomes.
