I have tried unsuccessfully to execute the maintenance cleanup tasks in a database maintenance plan. The backups and all checks execute successfully. However, the maintenance cleanup tasks do not.
The following are the steps that I have taken so far:
I have created a separate job. It runs manually, but not as scheduled.
I have created an SSIS package. It runs manually, but not as scheduled.
The SQL Server and SQL Agent services are using Network Service as a logon.
The maintenance plan connection is local server connection with Windows integrated security.
I've also tried a named connection with specific user name as sa.
The jobs are owned by sa.

When you say it doesn't work - what does that mean?
When you state that it runs manually - but not scheduled, what does that mean?
And, I would recommend that you change the services from running under the network service account to a domain account (called service line account) with minimal privileges.

Hi Jeffrey,
Thanks for responding to my inquiry.
When I state that it works manually but not as scheduled, I mean that a schedule has been created for the maintenance task to start and they do not start at all.
When I start the maintenance tasks job manually, it works.
When I run the SSIS maintenance tasks package manually, it works.

My guess would be that either the schedule is not enabled, or the fact that you are using the network service account instead of a domain account or local system is what is causing the problem.
I would try changing the service account and see what happens.
