One of our daily maintenance plans in a sql 2005 server which back up’s(to a SAN) about 150Gb of data and the reorganizes and updates statistics Daily .
The Maintenance plan Flow is as follows (Starts in the night):
1) Integrity Check-Takes about 25minutes.
2) Full Backup – 45minutes.
3) Delete Old Backups – within Seconds.
4) Index Reorganize-1hour30minutes.
5) Update Statistics- 2hours
I question is ,Is the time taken to reorganize and update statistics normal and do we have to update statistics daily(I know that there is data being added and some data being Truncated daily.)
Is this an Ideal Maintainence plan or instead of a full backup Daily will a differential Back help?
Thanks in Advance

depends on your SAN and disk configuration. i've seen alter index times go from 10 minutes to 30 minutes on a table on the same SAN just on a different set of disks

what about the statistics? i have another Import job that kicks off at the same time when the Update statistics step starts . Is there a possibility that Update statistics is Slowing down due to the Import(around 200,000 rows are inserted).

my guess would be yes since if you have auto update stats enabled it's going to do it twice

Can i use SP_updatestats 'resample' instead of the update stats maintainence task .
