Is your browser service started and are the proper ports open on the firewall?

Is this a new install or an old one?
If old, and you have been able to connect before, what changed on the server?
If new, check this link for information: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2008/04/30/steps-to-troubleshoot-connectivity-issues.aspx
I'm not sure if SQL 2008 has the same issues as 2005 had, where you specifically had to set up SQL to be remote accessible. I can't find the option in the SQL 2008 tools, but if I do, I'll post the directions to find it so you can also check that.
EDIT: Oh, hey. On that link, there's this little nugget: "For remote connection, NP and/or TCP protocols must be enabled. Once you enabled protocols in SCM, please make sure restart the SQL Server." Have you check this?
