Log Shipping for Disaster Recovery and Transactional backups through Commvault

  • We currently use Commvault to do transactional backups our important OLTP databases, and nightly diff backups on other systems.

We now want to setup a DR site, where these transaction logs are shipped and restored every 15min/30min etc depending on RPO/RTO of systems.

We cannot have two different products backing up the T-logs or the LSNs get messed up, right ? i.e. Native transaction log shipping through SQL server and simultaneously, transactional backups through Commvault.

So, does Commvault (or other 3rd party backup products) offer a method to do log-shipping via the software ? Maybe a job that can be scheduled to continually restore the latest t-logs at the DR site ?

Correct that you don't want two different products doing transaction log backups as you will break the log chain. A lot of the third party products do support log shipping. I've always gone the route of doing it in SQL Server just for ease of troubleshooting but I know others have used third party products. I was just checking Commvault and it appears they do. I'd go to their  forums and do a search - I got quite a few when I searched on Log shipping. Here is a link to the search on their forums:

  • I would agree that you want to use CommVault to make the log backups and restore them elsewhere.

What did you find out on this?  I've glanced through many of the commvault forum posts but didn't find anything concrete that says "yes, it supports log shipping".  The only real thing I've found is for an existing log shipping process to remain in place while CV makes a copy of the transaction log backup.  But that's about it...no real findings on whether or not it will perform a backup from the primary and restore it one the secondary...
