Log Shipping

  • My company wants to have a backup server in case our production server dies. I am considering log shipping, but have one question. I have SS2K EE and will log ship from this server to another that only has SS2k Standard Ed. Is this possible and what do I do when the production server is revived?

  • Log shipping isn't supported in the standard edition. However, replication IS so you may want to try transactional replication that runs every few hours. I'd try different delays between to maximize performance. Let me know how this works.

  • It's worth noting that the SQL7 log shipping procedures still work more or less. We had used those, customized slightly, before SQL2K came out. We just kept using them with SQL2K SE.

I've seen nothing in them that is built into server itself, it's all pretty standard T-SQL and windows scripting stuff.

I have no idea of EE's versions are more robust; I am sure they are more automated to turn on.
