Log Shipment questions only for sql server 2000

  • Please refer to my question number when answering.

    1. Do I have to have same db name in primary and secondary servers? Can I not map the primary server db name to a different db name in the secondary server/

    1. Does log shipment transfer the whole db every time or just sends the changes/updates?

    1. My log shipment seems to be working fine but I see a Red clock in EM>myServer->management->SQL Server Agent? What does this Red clock mean?

    1. What if I go and delete a record in the secondary server and then delete the same record from the primary server. Would the log shipment get confused?

    1. What if I add a table in the secondary server? Would the log shipment still be operating properly? It should.

    1. How do I change the (readonly) on the secondary server to read/write? Or it is not possible.

    1. Do I have to have a third server as monitor? I do not see anything marked monitor in EM even though log shipment GUI forced me to select a server as monitor.

    1. Can I selectively update a table or two out of the full db log shipment by applying some kind of filter – (I do not want to update all tables but just a few.)
  • 1. No. Only in case when you will change servers roles ex.: after change  your old primary would be new secondary and vice versa

    2.Only updates

    3. It should be if you see it in left upper coner of SQL Server Agent

4-5. Not sure what you mean by "a record". If a record in a table then I'm not sure you could do it. The second server would be in read-only state so you wouldn't be allowed to change data

    6. Yes it possible, but then your log shipping proccess will finish. You can simple go to primary server DB Maintenance plan and remove log shipping. Or if you made role reversal possibility there are couple microsoft scripts which allow you to do that. After that your servers change roles: the primary become new secondary and the secondary become  new primary

7.Microsoft recommends you to have third server for monitoring purpsoes. But it's not necessary

    8. No you cann't. It's all or nothing
