Log Reader Agent Syntax Error

  • I've encountered a baffling syntax error when installing Replication and greatly appreciate your help.

I've never encountered this error before.

After installing replication on a new Windows 2000 server the Log Reader Agent displays the error

"Line 22:  Incorrect Syntax near '='.  The step failed".

When I manually run the log reader executable (logread.exe) I get the full error message "Status: 0, code: 27101,

text: 'The license for this installation of SQL Server does not permit SQL Server to run at the Publisher.

    "Status: 0, code: 1007, text: 'Line 22: Incorrect syntax near '=' .'.

"Status: 0, code: 0, text: 'Could not get the license information correctly.'."

The closest error reference Microsoft has deals with Cluster Servers, which is not the case here.  While it may
be a license issue, the server was installed with Per Seat licensing the same as other servers I manage.
I monitor replication at multiple servers, all configured essentially the same.  Most of servers are still NT 4,
but a few are Win2000.  This error has not occurred on the other servers.

    Thanks again,

  • David,

while I've not seen this particular error before, I wonder if it is due to the edition of SQL Server you are using. I use personal edition at home and can only configure Snapshot and Merge (I can subscribe to a transactional publisher but can't publish myself). I believe this also applies to MSDE. Could you confirm which edition is the publisher.

  • Thank you Paul.  The server is using the enterprise edition and is configured as the publisher and distributor.

  • Paul, nice job finding that link.  Sadly it doesn't help because its for Server 2000 and I have Server 7.0 with SP4 already applied.  I checked the registry settings and they appear correct.  SQL Server 7.0 and SP4 have been reinstalled twice.

    Thanks,

  • Update - just found out my client actually installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server rather than the standard version I thought they had.  Since Advanced uses clustering, I'm wondering if that's causing the license error.  I know that this license error can be caused by clustering in an NT environment.   Has anyone using Advanced Server with SQL Server 7.0 and seen this error?  Thanks!

  • David,

Did you get this issue resolved, if so, how did you do it.  I have the same issue.

I would appreciate any help you could provide.

    Thanks,

    John
