Log File running out of space

  • Hi,
Recently I changed our database recovery model from Simple to Full. However, now the other night the log file filled up and I had to run manually a transaction log back up and the cleared everything. and it was fine. I then set a nightly back up to do the same and even though it ran it still filed up this morning do to nightly processes I guess.
So I am thinking I have to increase the log file size.
My question is how would I know what I can increase this to, and how much do I need to increase it to.

    Thank you

  • Increase the frequency of the log backups rather than increasing the disk first. Schedule them to run every hour or more frequently if needed (depending on your RPO).

    Thanks

  • That sounds like a better idea thanks.

    1.  How often do you do transaction log backups?
    2.  How much disk space has been allocated for the log file on disk?
    3.  How big is the database in question?
    4.  What is the largest index in the database?
    5.  Are you doing index maintenance?  If so, how often?

First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
