As you are looking for a SQL Server solution, rather than SSIS, Jeff's solution is worth checking out. He knows more about importing data direct into SQL Server than anyone else I can think of.

Sorry... I kind of ignored this thread because it looked like folks had handled it with SSIS. Do you actually need a non-SSIS solution? If so, can you provide the CREATE TABLE statement for your target table that "has about 50 columns in it", please? 😀 Or do you want everything loaded into character based columns?
