Linked Server to SAP HANA database.

  • Greetings all.  It's been a very long time, but I'm back.  Does anyone have experience with setting up a linked server to a SAP HANA database?  I have hanaclient-2.8.20-windows-x64 installed and a DSN created using the HDBODBC driver that comes with the client install.  I am able to use the DSN to connect with generic ODBC connections using RazorSQL, SAS, and Alteryx, where all they need is the DSN name, username, and password (no provider strings needed).  I don't see HDBODBC listed as a provider in the list of linked server providers, and I don't know if there is a Microsoft generic ODBC provider like the other applications I mentioned.  I'm almost strictly an SQL guy, so this stuff is a bit outside of my expertise.  I would greatly appreciate any help/advice I can get.  Thank you.

  • I have never used SAP HANA but suspect you would be better with Polybase rather than a linked server.

  • I don't think a linked server to SAP HANA is an option.  At least is wasn't for us.  I forget weather it was performance issues or that SAP just wouldn't allow it, but we abandoned efforts for linked servers into HANA.  Our main solution to working with SAP data outside of SAP was to create an extract database on a SQL box in Azure containing the needed SAP tables.  Data is replicated from SAP to this database via the Qlik replication tool.  It works well but is large and everything in it is a duplicate of data stored in SAP.
