Linked Server - Odd problem

  • I am having a strange Linked Server problem. The scenario is as follows. I have two servers, one for my main database and one for some other applications. I do selects and inserts from the main server to the subordinate server. The links worked flawlessly under the following circumstances:

    1) Both servers on WinNT and SQL Server 7

    2) Main server upgraged to Win2003 and SQL Server 2000, while sub server still ran WinNT and SQL Server 7

Failures began once the subordinate server was also upgraded to Win2003 and SQL 2000. I am able to set the links up in Enterprise Manager, and they look operational there, however query analyzer and stored proc access is hit or miss. Most times I get back a "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error. Sometimes the select or insert gets through just fine. It will then allow access for a while before going back into failure mode. Anyone seen similar behavior? Thanks in advance.

  • Unofrtunately haven't really worked with W2K3 yet. My suspicion is that there is truly network issues here, possibly the overhead of more authentication or load from the 2003 system.

Have any other servers been upgraded to 2003? Are there delays getting authenticated or accessing network resoruces?

  • I'm looking into Win 2003 authentication issues as a possible solution. My VB guys had some odd problems with getting some ASP code to connect when I first brought up the main server. Unfortunately, they aren't quite sure why it started working so it isn't helping my research any. Thanks for the input.
