Is there a Limitation on database mail where it cannot email external email addresses? I can send internal emails via this but not external emails.

I'm not aware of such limitation. I would check it with the person that is in charge of the exchange server.

I send email to my gmail account on a regular basis. You can also set up database mail to use an external smtp server like hotmail or gmail.

preventing relaying to outside emails is a very common mailserver setting; my mail server will not allow relaying unless you AUTH with username and password;
the server can also allow relaying from specific IP addreses as well.
get with your network guy and tell him the issue, he can fix it very quickly. the issue is outside of SQL, but very common.
