Licensing Question

  • Is a SQL license "backwardly compatable"?

In other words if I have 2 processors running SQL 2000 and two running 2008 do I need two licenses for 2000 and 2 licenses for 2008, or can I use four 2008 licenses?

    Thanks

  • There usually are downgrade rights for licenses, however they have never allowed you partially license sockets.

In other words, you could never set affinity for 2 CPUs in a 4 CPU box and buy two licenses. It's all or nothing.

  • was wrong... tx Steve

  • Thanks Steve,

We have the correct number of licenses, but a mis-match on versions.

Our situation is (simplified) that four servers 1 x 2005, 1 x 2008 and 2 x 2000 and enough 2008 licenses to cover the processors, so from what you say we should be OK - unless I have misunderstood.

  • If you have 4 2008 licenses, depending on edition, I think you can install a 2000 instance and a 2008 instance on the same box with 4 CPU sockets. You wouldn't need to set processor affinity.

  • OK thanks 100 % clear now
