Licensing fun

  • What do I have to do to upgrade a sql 2000 32 bit license to sql 2005 64 bit? We are migrating a production server to the 64 bit platform.

I hope it isn't too costly.

  • Unfortunately this is not a very straightforward question. A lot depends on how you have your MS software licensed, or whether you bought in "retail". One thing though, 32/64 is not an issue, they may be different SKU's but they don't charge differently for them. There is processor (not core, by processor socket) licensing and server plus CAL licensing. You probably have the latter.. You have to upgrade both the server plus the CALS. And because 2008 is released you are really buying 2008 with a downgrade.

The retail purchase prices (NOT UPGRADE) are:

    SQL 2008 Standard $1,849.00 with 5 CALS.

    SQL 2008 5 User CAL $199.00.

Upgrades will *probably* be 1/2 that. Talk to who you buy MS software from for hard prices..

  • Elliot is correct, you upgrade your license to 2008 from 2000, picking the edition you want. Standard -> Enterprise may be costly, and I'm not sure you save much if you had Enterprise and are going to Standard.

You then use the "downgrade rights" to just run 2005.

32/64 platform doesn't matter, same price.

  • Yes it is somewhat complicated. The 64 bit server is much more robust that our current 32 bit. Sounds like we need to talk to the OEM that sold us our old SQL2000 licenses.
