Licensing (Again)

  • Another post about licensing. I've read all the Microsft sites and threads on here but it still does my head in. Let's take a really basic example about CALs.

I have 2 servers and 1 desktop. In the server plus CAL model am I right in thinking I need only 1 CAL? So even if I had 100 servers and 1 desktop I still only need 1 CAL (and 100 server licenses as well)

    cheers

  • This sounds about right, so long as you are using the 1 CAL in the per seat model (and you only have one seat ) you can safely (legally) access any SQL Server you like.

With the per server model each server you have will need 1 CAL allocating for each desktop that connects to it

However, if any of the SQL Servers is available/accesible from the internet then you need the per processor licencing instead.

  • Yo need CALs whenever you have authenticated users, usually people on your domain accessing the SQL Server. If you have unuthenticated users, i.e. the Internet, then you need a per CPU. The per seat v per server comes into play when calculating how many people access how many servers. If you have an significant percentage of people accessing your servers, then typically per seat is better because you aren't administering who connects to what.
