Lets help the experts help themselves

  • Lynn Pettis (3/6/2009)

I have to admit that I am not really a Saint.

Since saints are, by definition, dead, I'm certainly glad to hear that! 🙂

Once hear/read/saw in a movie (don't remember which) a rather clever threat. "When we're done with you, you'll be a genuine saint!" Or something to that effect.

  • I now realise created this thread in an unreasonable fit of self interested annoyance, and then picked out Gail who amongst the best contributors on the site. SORRY GAIL!

It seems to me that all the contributors on this thread have taken on the question and answered it in detail, personally, and altruistically. Thanks for the comprehensive and considered contributions, they have taught me something.

You all clearly want to help people whilst I moan. Which makes me feel like a bit of an old misery to be honest!

I do think there is some scope for some sort of an experts exchange though Steve Jones - unless there already is one...

    .

  • Oh, and Steve Jones, a couple of points for you based on your comment, which was considered and useful.

First, I think you write really well (by which I mean you enable easy understanding of your points in your readers). There is an example on this thread where you talk about not wanting to be an expert in video editing, but needing to do it. I have just installed Photoshop. But I don't understand it yet, so I need help. This doesn't make me stupid. You helped me to see that simple fact clearly.

Second, I AM a consultant. So people do pay me for what I know. What I would love is a resource where the most experienced members could discuss things that are important to them.

    Tim

    .

  • Tim,

I think you did a good job creating this thread, and it's good to stop and think periodically about why I do this, and do I still like it. Thanks for provoking the discussion.

  • Hey, we posted the same time. Thanks for the great complement. I appreciate that.

On the experts exchange, I've resisted that, but I think there might be some value there. I participate (sometimes) on the MVP newsgroups, and those are better places to discuss things. With experts only, it's a rigorous, and low-noise debate.

If there was enough interest, I suppose I could set up some "experts only", invitation only groups here. Anyone want to start a thread for that?

  • I really support that idea. I think a more private invited members forum would enable me to speak more freely/

Although I am a rookie here, I am also a Microsoft Gold partner for SQL Server!

Since I am only a rookie, how about one of the 'old timers' starts the thread!

    .

  • Amen.

(This was in response to Lynn not being a Saint, and therefore not being dead.)

Huh, I didn't realize that individuals could become Gold partners. I thought that only companies could do that (mine is, for instance).

  • Thanks RBarryYoung for being absolutely correct in your comment.

I am the Director of Database Services for a company that is a Microsoft Gold partner for SQL Server Competences.

I hope this clarifies my previous comment!

Heh... With all the ring knocking going on, I just knew THAT was coming.

  • Does that mean all pork chops, katanas, longbows, and trebuchets would have to be checked at the door? Doesn't sound like much of a party to me......

Heh... "Let's help the experts", indeed. Here's the primary reason I don't join such things...

... that, and I'm not leaving my pork chops at the door for anyone. 😉

I don't think that would work here. Too elitist, and if there is something I know about many of the heavy hitters here, they aren't elitists except in talent. They help anyone and everyone the same from the entry level newbie to the long time veteran.

Just one question. How would you determine who's allowed in there and who's not?
