Great editorial about learning in the margins!
This is quite a timely editorial because last night I was watching the OKC - Spurs NBA playoff game while setting up an ESXi virtual server for home use during the commercials and half time. I've used virtualization with Windows as the host up to now but I wanted to try and expand my horizons a bit by seeing if I could get virtualization running on bare metal.
It wasn't long before I found myself editing python files in RAM on the fly without rebooting in order to get ESXi to install on my hardware. By the beginning of the 3rd quarter I had it up and running and was able to enjoy the rest of the game knowing I had just done some learning in the margins without really missing out on anything.
Who needs all those commercials anyways? 😉

Good editorial. Important point, well-expressed.

Excellent article! The better part of the last 10 years of my life have been spent lerning in the margins. I have encouraged others to do the same. SQL Server Central has helped me become much better. Other sites have helped my development by publishing content that can be read on or offline. Steve reading 15+ quality articles a day will elevate ANYONE'S knowledge in a specific area or multiple areas. Thank you for the articles over the years and for fostering an environment that encourages growth in all aspects of life.

On the topic of exercise in life's margins: rather than spend 5 minutes cruising a huge parking lot for the closest parking space, park further away and walk.
But it's probably not a good idea to be reading a book about SQL Server while you are walking through the parking lot. 🙂

Great article Steve. Personally, I live my life on the margins, there is a lot of freedom out there. 😀

I think I've spent my entire 30+ year career learning in the margins; whether at work or not. Most employers I have had haven't had the money nor time to send me to formal classes. I have had to seek out information whenever I needed it.
As far as life is concerned... just the other evening, I was watching the Chicago Cubs destroy my Milwaukee Brewers (10-0). Instead of feeling miserable, I read a book about bass fishing. It made me forget the game (at least for a time) and now I can't wait to go fishing.

speaking of squeezing in exercise here is a nice hack for you from an exercise physiologist called Martin Gibala worth looking up who has found you can get pretty much the same benefit from a few minutes of high intensity exercise as you can from traditional 30-40 mins of medium intensity cardio

Very nice article. I can't agree with you more on this 🙂
