Having been a DBA for quite some time I am aware of the need to obtain and install the latest service pack, and do know where to find it. My question is this:
Is there a way to receive automatic alerts when a service pack has been distributed?

I setup a recurring Outlook Task to remind me to check for new versions every two weeks. I will typically plan to roll out relevant updates to a Dev server first, then bring them through the environments until they make it to Prod.
You can also subscribe to Aaron Bertrand's or Glenn Berry[/url]'s newsletters. They typically send out notices.

Thanks! Both those names look familiar. I've been away from the forums/blogs for a while, and just getting to the point where I want to take my DBA skills to the next level.

Also... since you did advise on installing, would you have any tips for applying a service pack to a production server running SharePoint? We are a small shop with no sandbox running SharePoint 2010 in this instance.

You're most welcome.
I have to admin, I have very little experience with SQL Server admin as it relates to SharePoint (not since 2007 and only a very small install). You may get some responses on this thread, or go ahead and post a new thread. There is bound to be someone qualified in SharePoint admin perusing this site that can and will provide some solid guidance.

Very cool, thanks for sharing *adds to rss reader* It looks like they've fallen a little behind though. No new posts since 8/1 :ermm:

Placed your rss link in my Live Bookmarks. I think staying tuned in (reading SQL ServerCentral, blogs, etc.) as well as the rss feed I will be all set.
Thanks!
