We realized we are short a DBA for our production/delivery team and we have opened a new slot with those subject line listed perks. So have you blown out a count(*) query on table before? Well we guarantee you the ability to do that on your first day working here. We work with multi-billion row tables, multi-terabyte databases every day if that sort of things interests you (it probably should to be for you to be successful here). We currently work primarily with SQL Server 2k5 but we have some MySQL databases so if you have some Linux/Unix to go with your Windows experience it will get used.
We have sweet offices (not cubes) with high rise views you could probably sell tickets for, of mountains or water and even both. We get the typical great medical benefits, free soda, stock options, and casual attire perks of a startup tech company but none of the drama of working with a bunch of over entitled, under qualified slackers because everyone I have met here and I do mean everyone is smart, works hard, and actually seems to know what is up.
I am on the DBA team and I actually love my job, and now there is another job just like it for you if you are the right fit for it for us. The term "right fit" is somewhat flexible and open ended so to give you an idea here are some suggestions: you should probably have been a production DBA for 5+ years or at least played one on TV and you should know SQL Server pretty darn well. Being able to write something in T-SQL beyond "sp_who2" and "sp_lock" and knowledge of at least one procedural language would all be helpful as well as a motivated personality who is able to teach and learn in equal amounts. That might have been a cheesypoof, somewhat bland ending for a requirement sentence but as far as I have seen we actually mean it here.
The company is Zillow.com and the location is Seattle, Washington.

Just wondering what the average of a sql server dba with 7 years of experience in both Oracle and SQL Server?
June 12, 2006 at 2:55 pm
I am going to assume that the adjective "average" is referring to an absent noun "salary" and not other absent nouns like "height", "weight", "IQ", or anything else normally considered private and/or confidential. My specific financial compensation is not something I would or maybe even could discuss, except to say I am a DBA with similar experience to yours (multiple RDBMS, multiple OS, several years experience), and I found that our HR group follows salary trends fairly closely for the Northwest area.
If you compare salaries here to say downtown NYC DBA levels or possible hourly rates for straight consulting at our level then I can assure you that you will be disappointed. For the startup that this is, I think they pay fairly well or I would not be working here. I have had my share of gigs at startups that didn't pay great but offered wonderful compensation through stock options that eventually proved to be worth little.
To address your actual question: do a little research for DBA jobs in Seattle and the NW with your skill set. I am sure you can find some ballpark figures that would prove valid for us.
The pay is good, the perks are good, the people are good, and the work is fun. What more do you need?

Dear James,
You have received six replies. Of these, one is from someone who apparently didn't read the entire post, one is from someone who cannot construct complete sentences, and one is from a "vendor" who is more concerned with saving 3 microseconds by replying in TXT-eze than making a good first impression (in print, no less).
Would you say this represents the quality of responses you have received, in general? That is to say, 50% of the candidates out there are...well...I think you get what I'm saying. I'm just curious how it looks from the other side.
Thanks,
James

Well, who can resist free soda?

...and I did not even mention the air hockey, foosball, and table tennis.
James S:
The HR department here has been handling the resumes and the good ones get filtered through my management down to me. The resumes that I have been asked to review so far have been reasonably solid.
I have heard of you from Mark B. as I am sort of your replacement on the team although the gig location is obviously different. If you have any interest in the moving back up to the Northern Hemisphere for work I am sure you would like it here. Besides...just think of the savings on sunscreen you would have!

I don't suppose that consideration would be given to international candidates.
p.s. You'd be hard pressed to find a better foosball player (I mean DBA) .

Just wondering which type I belong to since I first replied this post.
