We've contracted a computer firm to migrate an old UNISIS app to sql server. Question the largest table has 15million entries and in total the hole database has 15Gigs on disk. I'm trying to demension the machine RAM, CPU, HARD DRIVES. Where can I find algorithms, info on how do these calculations.

MSPress publishes both a Performance Tuning Guide and a SQL Resource Kit, both good sources for this type of information.

I like the book, but I wouldn't sweat it too much as hardware is pretty cheap these days. You can get a $10K server from DELL with Dual 2.4GHz/512K Xeons and 4GB of RAM for around $10K (I'm sure Compaq/IBM etc. are also competitive, I'm just familiar with Dell.)
Add in another server for an MSCS cluster and a shared SCSI3 disk pack and you still will probably spend more on software and support than for server hardware.

I have used the tools in the sql res kit and ERwin to do estimations on database migrations. You may want to give them a look.

Thanks, I'm going to check the book out, as well as the resource kit. My problem regarding hardware is that I can by a 10k,15k or 20k server now, but I can't by a 10k and then say that that one dose not work. And also I have to give some numbers to support why a 20k and not a 10k not just "since it's cheep, and its better"

Find a way to justify the 20k machine. Better to be over the top than under.
15GB isn't that big, BTW.

If you need some help where the justifications can be made if you will post the full specs of each machine here we can over help I am sure.
