Issues after installing XP SP2

  • I installed XP SP2 on my machine (which also hosts sql server 2000 db) and now I can not access the sql server to use DTS to export data, although I can do anything else I want with it. The error I get is this:

Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server. Error Description: [DBNETLIB][Connection Open (Connect())]. SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Context: Error during initialization of the provider.

The thing is, I can log in to another machine on my network using remote desktop and then log in to s ql server on that machine and perform the export from there.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks~

  • This is probably related to Windows Firewall. When XP SP2 is installed, the default action for most ports is to close them. This means that SQL cannot be seen from anywhere else except on the server (in this case the Win XP machine). Try opening port 1433 (assuming you are using the default instance).

I am not sure why connecting from another machine works though.

  • How do I open port 1433?

  • Launch "windows firewall" (you will find this in Control Panel.

Click on "Exceptions" and then click "Add port ..."

For name type something like "SQL Server", for port type 1433.

Click on "Change scope..." and make appropriate changes to suit the computers/network you are expecting to attempt to connect to the Win XP box.

    Click on OK 3 times.
