Hi all. Checking first to see if I'm at the right forum for newbie sql server setup.
I installed 2014 sql server express and cannot find the gui for operation.
I think it is called the SQL Server Management Studio? I can't seem to find
it or launch it.
I think the 2014 sql server express downloaded and installed ok, as far as
I could tell. I didn't seem to get any errors or anything. On the windows 8.1
app/start list there appears four items,... configuration, error and usage,
import and export, and installation.
I use windows 8.1 on home desktop, have a web based server account with
domain name, and have used filezilla to edit files on the server. I am looking
to create a system whereby an android app will contact the server and trade
a small piece of information from a database on the server. Not unlike a
stock value lookup app.
To repeat my problem; I can't find the server management studio gui. Thanks!!!

You might have only installed the database engine. You needed to install SQL Server Express with tools (or with advanced services). You could donwnload and install Management Studio from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dn434042.aspx
Be sure to choose the following option: SQL Server Management Studio Express (SQLManagementStudio)

super, Thanks for swift reply! I guess I'm at the right forum then, yay.
I would've thought that manager would come with original package.
I'll go that route and get back with results.
Thanks!
Cheers.

I think I got the right download place finally after
putting in some passwords to ms and such.
But omg, 2/3 of a gigabyte. That will take over an
hour on my turtle download speed. That seems way
more huge than the original sql express download, and
I thought THAT was huge.

It is downloading now. Does it sound like I got the right thing, at 2/3 GB?

Can you post the name of your original download?

Is that last post enough info? I tried to insert
image and find original download page, but need
to leave for work soon. Thanks so much.

Just finished downloading SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU at 2/3 GB.
Going to wait till after work to try to install such a behemoth.

As I suspected, you had downloaded just the database engine. That's why you need the separate download.

OK, as far as I know the management studio installed ok.
There was a list at the end where it said the only thing that
had failed was the computer restart.
So I restarted and updated, and now cannot find anything new
anywhere that would launch the server manager. There are still
only the same four entries in the w8.1 apps menu mentioned in a post above.
So I guess I'm in the same state as before, except for having installed the manager.
Thanks for help!

OK, As far as I know the sql server manager download
installed ok. There was a list at the end that said every
list item loaded ok except for a computer restart.
So, I restarted and still looking for how to operate the
sql server.
Thanks for generous assistance.!

ok, I installed the manager. At the finish of installation
there was a list where it said everything had installed ok
except for a computer restart, which I then did.
After restarting, everything looks the same, and I still can't
find how to launch the sql server. There are still the
aforementioned 4 entries in the w8.1 app/start page.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to get started.

Well, duhh.
Sorry, didn't know there are two pages, and don't
know how to delete posts or edit them. I think they
all say the same thing more or less, lol. Sorry about
redundancy and general ineptitude. It is late now.
