I would like to specialize, but since some management and most, if not all, customers (who are non-technical) expect you to know it ALL, that's difficult.
What other tasks do you do at your job other than SQL?

For the past year I have been doing Oracle database development so I have to go back to my previous employer to answer this question.
Besides supporting our development, test, and production SQL Servers; which included backup/restore processes, database and query tuning, and assisting developers in developing good SQL code. I also did SSIS development, database design (we were starting a data warehouse project), integrating data transfers between internal and external system, implementing database mirroring for high availability, assisting in the architectural design of the HR/Finance server infrastructure (web servers, application servers, database servers) using both virtual and physical servers.
Assisted in writing queries used do develop a variety of reports (didn't do the report development myself, just the backend data retrieval).

Make sure that that thing that spits out our erp's data works in tip top shape, no matter what.
Too long to list all of what that entails.

VMWare backup, in charge of our ECM (which is Vignette for Oracle and yet I am a SQL DBA and we have Oracle DBAs...hmmm)

At my current job I was initially hired for SQL Server Administration of the production environments.
But I had that fully optimized and automated within three months.
So now I also am doing development and business intelligence.
It depends on the type of company you are in. A very large company will limit you to your specific silo.
Smaller to medium sized companies will be much more flexible in terms of allowing you to build your resume outside of just the SQL specialization.

I'm the guy who say's "NO!" the most at work and probably the least liked, but I'm the most popular guy when it comes to getting people from having to update their resume because I pull them to the side a lot and show them the huge hole they're digging themselves in because what they are trying to do will just not work or just playin suck.
Sometimes I wish the only thing I ever did learn (with regards to computers) was just how to stop and start the SQL Server services...

I once did VBA, VB6, and a few other languages for coding.
Now, I'm SQL Server all day every day. SSIS and query coding mostly, administrative work when required depending on the contract. Working on getting enough experience in SSAS/RS to leave it on my resume.
That's all I do. I'm happy with it, so are my employers. But then again, I'm also the 'hired gun'. If you need that specialty, you bring it in.
Never stop learning, even if it hurts. Ego bruises are practically mandatory as you learn unless you've never risked enough to make a mistake.
