It is possible to run both SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 on the same machine. It is also possible to run SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on the same machine. However, only the older version should be installed as a default instance. The newer version (whether SQL Server 2000 or 2005) should be installed as a named instance.

The sort answer is yes. In our development environment we have installed 2000 and 2005 on the same box without any problems. We even have multiple instances of 2005 on one box, we just gave each instance a name. We have been using the box for over a month without any issues.
