I tried doing that and got an incompatibility error. I was wondering if there is a workaround or fix for that or if there is a 2012 DB for SQL 2008.
The error message is -
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
Attach database failed for Server 'YourComputer'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.50.1617.0+((KJ_RTM_GDR).110422-1901+)&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Attach+database+Server&LinkId=20476
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

There are also sample databases available for earlier versions of SQL Server.

You'll need to download a SQL 2008 or earlier adventureworks. The 2012 one is a 2012 database and hence can only be restored to SQL 2012 or newer.
