Is it possible to edit and deploy existing SSRS and SSIS objects in VS 2008?

Well you can certainly edit an SSIS 2005 package in VS2008, if you have BIDS 2008 (SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition).
You can open the 2005 pakcage and edit it. You can also save it and deploy it, but at this point it will change it to a SSIs2008 package, so be aware.
I beleive that the situation is the same for SSRS, but I couldn't say for sure.

How feasible is it to use BIDS 2005 in VS 2008?

Not at all feasible. BIDS is just a part of VS, so they're really the same thing (but may have different parts installed/active).
Your BIDS version (2005 or 2008) is the same as what version(s) of SQL Server Developer Edition you have installed. If you also have the same version of VS installed, then you can access all of BIDS from VS, but only the same versions. If you do not have the same version of VS installed, then you still get VS, but it only shows on the BIDS menus and you can only access the BIDS parts.
I have both versions of VS and both versions of SQL Server Developer Edition so I can run either, and they co-exist just fine.
On the flip side: SQL Server Developer Edition is stupid cheap (both 2005 & 2008). Just buy it if you need it. At $65-$95, why waste any time on this? Just do it. I did and now I never have to worry about it.
