Is GFS (grandfather, father, son) tape rotation still used nowadays?

  • I knew and used GFS a few years ago. Not sure whether any new technology/method has been introduced for tape rotation.

  • I'm not sure. Most places I've worked have tended to be more specialized. DBAs just ask for the generic "tape for xx/xx/xxxx"

  • When asking for "xx/xx/xxxx" backup, the answer is no "xx/xx/xxxx" backup/tape available, can I give you "xx/xx/xxxx – N days" instead?

If GFS in place, the tape should be available. Wondering whether I am falling behind of any new methodology/standard for tape rotation.

  • I'm sure there's something, though in any scheme you might not have every tape. How many days do you keep before you reuse.

I think we used to keep the most recent 7 days in a row, and some variation later. Often I think we were monthly tapes for a long time and then quarterly and yearly forever.
