Inventory of ALL Network Paths, dead logins, active logins from connection strings for all databases in a SQL Server

  • Hello,

Anyone has a script or know of a cheap/free product or suggestions on how to do the following quickly and efficiently?

    • Document all Network Paths (shares) being accessed by one of the SQL Servers at my company. Includes reviewing all Jobs, DTS Packages, Stored Procs, Active X Functions, etc.

    • Document all dead logins on the server and all UserIDs being used in connection strings.

    Thanks much!

  • What do you mean by user IDs in the connection strings?

Probably close to 99% of user IDs logins come from connection strings, some really transparent to you. All User Interface tools like Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer and other tools are client tools and are language-based, like DMO. So EM internally probably uses connection strings to connect to SQL Server.

Maybe something like OPENROWSET from the existing connection does not use connection string, I am not sure. I am also not sure how switching databases from the existing connection in Query Analyzer is implemented.

Maybe the only connections that don't use connection strings are those when everything is limited to the SQL Server instance. I wanted to make Job as an example, but DTS jobs are VB-based, so there is a connection string.

  • When I say UserIDs, I mean if there is an ActiveX Script within DTS or something like that, which is passing an explicit connection string with SQL authentication to query agaist a given database within that SQL Server.
