Invalid product key

  • I have been using a VM with an evaluation version of SQL Server 2012 on there. The 180 days ran out. I tried adding two product keys but both gave the same issue. "The SQL Server Product key is not valid. To proceed, re-enter the product key values from the certificate of Authenticity (COA) or SQL Server Packaging.."

I have tried a SQL 2012 development product key and also the product key for SQL Server 2012 BI from my MAP(Microsoft Action Pack) licenses. Neither gets accepted??

Any suggestions. I really dont want to uninstall and reinstall.

    Thanks

Have you tried MS support? We can't really do much of anything here because 1) we aren't MS support specialists and 2) we have no idea about any of the details here.

  • Will give it a go. I just wondered if there was any known reason why a valid product key would not be accepted

  • I could understand why the BI key would not work, the EVAL edition is essentially enterprise which is a higher version of sql server. Developer is at the same level so you should be able to use that key.

You shouldn't have to reinstall but you will need to do an edition upgrade. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc707783(v=sql.120).aspx

  • Edition upgrade was the way I was trying to go and it just errors when I put the product key in. Bit of a pain!

I really dont want to wipe the VM and start from scratch.

    Thanks
