Integration Services Service - When is it needed

  • Hi

    My question is simply this:

"Do you require the Integration Services service to be running on a server where you only wish to run an SSIS package via the SQL Agent?"

I believe the answer is no but I can't find a definitive answer, nor can I get it to work.

The following is from the MSDN SQL Developer Centre:

"The Integration Services service supports the administrative interface in SQL Server Management Studio for listing, starting, stopping, monitoring, importing, and exporting Integration Services packages. The Integration Services service is not required to design packages. The Integration Services service is also not required to run packages, or to schedule SQL Server Agent jobs that run packages."

This would suggest that I don't require the service to be running. When I try and run my SSIS package via a job though I get the "product level is insufficient" error message.

It's not the end of the world if I have to install the service but I'd prefer not to if I don't have to.

    cheers

  • Hi,

The SSIS service is designed to enable the management\monitoring of SSIS packages; it is not necessary that it be running in order to execute a package. Likewise, stopping the SSIS service won’t prohibit you from running SSIS packages. However, if the SSIS service is running, the SSIS Designer will be able to use it to cache objects that are used in the designer, enhancing the performance of the designer.

    Thanks,

  • It MUST be installed, I am not sure if it has to be running.

  • Thanks for the replies guys and thank you for giving a prime example of my problem.

    First reply:

"The SSIS service is designed to enable the management\monitoring of SSIS packages; it is not necessary that it be running in order to execute a package."

    And then alternatively:

    "It MUST be installed"

2 differing answers. Does anyone know the definitive answer? I'm inclined to believe that the service does not need to be installed to purely run packages via the agent but as yet I haven't found the steps required to make this work.

    cheers

  • Hi,

It must be installed to use things like DTExec, but you don't have to have the service running.

    Thanks,

  • Thank you. I've just successfully run a package with Integration Services installed but not running.

To me this seems a rather simple but effective solution to the problem of SSIS not being cluster aware. There's a lot of information out there on how to cluster SSIS when in fact all that is required is to install the service and not start it!

    Thanks again.
