Installing updates on multiple instances?

  • Likely an easy question.

If we install multiple instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 (all will be the same version) on a single server, how would we go about installing updates to SQL, such as a Service Pack? Would the SP installer ask which instance we want to update, and require us to therefore update each instance separately, or would it install to all instances at once?

Ditto for any security updates and the like.

    Thanks,

    Jason A.

  • Jason,

if you have multiple instances on on server during servicepack installation you will be asked which instances you want to upgrade. You can choose just one, several or all whichever suites your situation best.

Security patches might behave differently, but as far as I remember usually you also have the option to choose which instances you want to apply the patch.
