Hi,
We're about to install SQL 2005 Ent x64 onto a Windows 2008 x64 server, has anyone done this? Wondering if there are any roles \ features that need to be enabled beforehand.
thanks,

I have had no particular problems installing SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2008 (or W2008 R2), but you do need to be aware of compatibility issues.
SQL 2005 requires .Net 2.0, but works quite happily with .Net 3.5 SP1 that comes with W2008. It is worth considering going direct to .Net 3.5 SP1 as more recent software requires this level.
When you run the SQL 2005 install, you will get program compatibility warning messages. Click to proceed with the install. You can avoid these messages by adding some keys to the registry that tell the program compatibility assistant to accept the software, but this is probably only worth doing for a scripted install.
As already stated, you should install SP2 after you have completed your initial SQL 2005 install. If you want to use BIDS then you will also need VS2005 SP1, plus a further hotfix to make VS2005 fully compatible with W2008. Many people have reported that BIDS works fine on W2008 without the SP1 upgrade, but strictly speaking you will be outside of Microsoft support for VS2005 if you do not install SP1.
The current (October 2009) version of FineBuild will cover all of the above in a scripted install, except for the VS2005 fixes.
