Installing Sql Server 2005 x64 on server

  • I'm going to install a sql server 2005 x64 version next week. It's going to be installed on a Windows 2003 x64 version.

I'm going to use Remote Desktop connection when installing it. Is it something I need to be aware of before installing?

Will I be able to just mount the iso file and run the setup.exe file, or do I need to run it from the command line?

This is my first install of sql server 2005 on a server.

    Thanks!

    Svein Erik

  • I didn't install remotely but 64 bit didn't seem any different from 32 bit from an install point of view.  At least not that I can remember (been a while).  Good luck, hope all goes well for you.

  • Should be ok to install from RDP. I do this always. I have the media locally and use the VirtualCD control panel to map ISO files as drive letters.

The installer is the same for 32bit as for x64 but you should be aware of drivers to Linked Servers are in 64bit. This is a caveat that causes our enterprise to splash out a few buck to OpenLink Software for drivers to connect to other databases.

Apart from that you should consider what services you need on the database server (e.g. wheter to install Notification Services etc).
