What steps do I take to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 7 machine? What things should I do first, etc?

Go to control panel under programs turn on turn off Windows features and add IIS7.5 after you add it most features needed to run Asp.net are disabled so you need to add them so IIS7.5 can be detected or the SQL Server 2005 installer will disable SSRS. This is assuming you are running Windows 7 Business or Ultimate all others comes without Windows authentication which is required by SSRS 2005.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.
I'm sorry, but I don't quite follow you, when you said, "Go to control panel under programs turn on turn off Windows features ..." Am I to turn on Windows features, or turn them off?

I am also running Ultimate and IIS7.5 was not installed I added it from that location but I later found out many features were still disabled. So you need to use the instruction in the link I posted to enable all the features needed to run Asp.net because SSRS 2005 is Asp.net dependent.
