Installing SQL Analysis Server

  • Hi, all, hoping you can help.  I am a relatively new SQL Server DBA.  We have a need to install the SQL Analysis Server.  We already have a SQL Server Database Cluster.  Someone told me I have to keep the SQL Analysis Server on the clustered database server in order to keep from having to pay for an additional license.  Is that true?

Also, if we do install it on the same clustered server, is the best option to cluster the Analysis server as well?  I found some instructions on how to do that, but they are fairly convoluted and it does not look like a very smooth process.  Or, can we install it on the clustered server, but on just one of the servers as a stand-alone service, as opposed to it being clustered?

Also, when we started to do the install (just poking around), it said that this version of analysis server, SP2, would not run on that version of Windows.  We have the SP4 service pak; if we proceed with this, should we install the sp2 version and then just lay on the sp4 service pak on top?

Thanks for any advice; any white papers you could point me to would be really helpful, too.

  • This thread may help (as a start!).

  • Helps a bit, but the main thing I'm still interested in is if we would have to purchase an additional license if we put it on another server.  I don't want to have to cluster it necessarily, but may be forced to do so if putting it on a different server requires us to purchase more SQL Server licenses.  Any ideas?
