Installing SQL 2005 x64 client tools on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (x64)

  • Hi All,

We have recently got some new HP G6 servers, and we're struggling to get the management studio installed.

The interesting thing is that we got it installed on the test G5 servers without any hitches, main difference being that the OS is Win 2003 Server on the G5's and Win 2003 Enterprise Edition on the G6.

We are installing SQL Server x64 2005 standard edition, and the database itself installs perfectly.

We've also tried applying the latest service packs and retrying the installation etc, but to no avail.

Anybody had anything similar - we've opened a ticket with MS - but this is now weeks ago 🙁

  • Ok, finally got it to install, what I did was:

    1. Install SQL Server - everything except the SQL tools.

    2. Extract the second x64 archive (disc 2)

    3. Navigate to folder in step 2\Setup

    4. Run the sql_tools.msi

    5. Select 'SQL Management Tools'

So basically - don't try to install the utilities through the standard setup process from disc 1. Painful, but there you go...

    Regards,
