Installing SP1 on SQL Server 2008 R2 Cluster

  • Hi all

MS KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958734 says before installing SP1 on Passive node

In the Cluster Administrator tool, use the corresponding SQL Network Name resource to remove half of the nodes from the possible owners list in the failover cluster instances on which you want to apply the updates. Remove the passive nodes first from the possible owners. Keep the list of nodes that you remove from the possible owners for future reference during this update process.

Do we really have to do this? Has anyone applied SP1 without ' removing half of the nodes from the possible owners list in the failover cluster instances '

Is there any straight forward instruction MS instruction seems bit complicated to me 🙂

    Thanks in advance

  • Hello,

I'm planning apply SP3 in SQl server 2008 cluster environment. Did you get answer to your question? Do i really need to take the other node off from the possible owner list?

Thanks in advance for your response!

  • you don't HAVE to for the patch to work but its advisable that you do to avoid the risk of a failover happening whilst applying the patch, which you don't want to happen.

It takes seconds to remove the passive node (the one you are applying the patch to) from the possible owners list.

  • Thanks for your prompt response! How do you remove/add a node from/to possible owner list?

  • totally from memory as I dont have a machine here -

in cluster manager, click on the SQL network name, select the advanced tab, possible owners are listed in there, deselect the passive node.

  • In detail:

start up failover cluster manager, under services and applications right click the SQL cluster resource and select properties, in the summary pane double click the server name, the possible owners are listed under the advanced policies tab.
